Iceland’s Oldest Pool

Renovations Being Completed on Iceland’s Oldest Swimming Pool

The oldest pool in Iceland in the town of Reykjavik is scheduled to reopen on December 3rd. Called Sundhöllin, it was originally opened in 1937 and was designed by Guðjón Samuelsson, who also designed a church, which is visible from the swimming pool itself. It was closed for renovations, but now it will reopen new and improved.

Looking rather inconspicuous from the outside with simple white walls and narrow, rectangle windows, the pool is 25 meters (82 feet) by 10 meters (33 feet) with a maximum depth of 4 meters (13 feet). Up to this point, there was only an indoor pool, but that changed this summer with the new renovations.

An outdoor pool of the same size is being built, along with a new reception area, two hot tubs, a steam room, and renovated locker rooms. Because Iceland is colder, the outdoor area will have walls protecting it from some of the elements. These additions will give this historic pool some new charm.
