Copper and iron are not immediately detrimental to one’s water and pool equipment; however a high ppm – or parts per million – of either metal can result in staining. We at Hydra sell copper ionizers to allow customers an option to use less chlorine. Both systems we’ve sold, the Main Access Power Ionizer and the Mineral Lion Ionizer, have levels that are set depending on the water volume to ensure there’s enough, but not too much, copper being distributed throughout the pool. Copper is a natural algaecide. So setting the ionizer at the correct level, shocking and brushing weekly, and maintaining a correct pH and alkalinity balance will help ensure a clean and safe pool to swim in.
If one has an ionizer and the copper levels are too high, simply turning down the level on the panel and diluting the water should lead to a healthier copper level. Without an ionizer, there are still methods to reduce the copper and iron levels to prevent metal staining and water discoloration. Aquabrite Metal Out Plus both prevents and controls stain and scale formation of copper, iron and even calcium. Be sure that the pH is between 7.2 and 7.6 before adding. Once added, the water may become cloudy. This means the Metal Out Plus is working and the cloudiness will eventually subside. It is then recommended to add Aquabrite A+ Stain Remover to remove any stains that have resulted from high metal and mineral levels. The chlorine levels should be low before adding the A+ Stain Remover to be sure it works as effectively as possible.
